Description:

BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of Certificated Personnel and School Site Administration to support students identified as Special Education in accordance with an Individualized Education Program (IEP); to support appropriate student behavior; to provide learning experiences to individual students and small groups; to perform a variety of supportive tasks and follow-up activities; and to do other related work as required.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
The individual activities and duties of this position may vary with such factors as grade level, teacher methods, subject area, project goals, and physical demands of students as well as the achievement levels, capabilities, emotional needs, and background of students.

Accommodates student’s disabilities through implementation of specialized learning activities and linguistically appropriate goals and objectives.

Assists instructional and support personnel in the implementation of lessons, interventions, related to I.E.P. objectives, including linguistically appropriate goals and objectives.

Provides instructional support in a variety of settings, including general education classrooms and other settings as appropriate.

Assists in the preparation and modification of specialized instructional materials related to students’ individual needs.

Monitors and assists students in a variety of activities to improve educational objectives and English Language skills.

Supervises students in a variety of settings, including recess, fieldtrips, classroom, and/or lunchtime, on the school grounds, including assisting students in getting onto and off the bus.

Uses positive reinforcement and other appropriate techniques to assist students in the development of appropriate social behavior and an appreciation of human diversity.

Assists in the development and maintenance of a learning environment appropriate to special instructional and cultural needs of students.

Interprets and translates as appropriate.

Uses good judgment regarding appropriate action to assist injured or physically ill students.

Attends trainings in Special Education and related areas.

Maintains a variety of records and files, including confidential student records and information.

Maintains classroom or learning facility in a clean, organized, and sanitary manner.

Accompanies teacher on home visits as appropriate; may interpret as needed for non-English-speaking students or parents.

Communicates effectively, in both oral and written form.

Assists students in toileting as required, with attention to proper lifting techniques and precautionary health measures.

Requirements:

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:
Basic concepts of child growth and development and developmental behavior characteristics, particularly pertaining to pupils with special learning needs.
Basic behavior management strategies and techniques relating to pupils experiencing atypical control problems.
Basic subjects including arithmetic, grammar, spelling, and reading.
Basic office procedures, methods, and computer equipment.
Routine record keeping techniques.
General concepts of child growth and development and child behavior characteristics.
Techniques used in controlling, motivating, and tutoring students.
English usage, punctuation, spelling, grammar, and math.
Routine record keeping.
General purposes and goals of public education. Specific subject area content as required in position assignment.
Methods for effective cooperation with instructional staff and other adults.
Safe working methods and procedures.
Instructional techniques and methods of preparing instructional materials.
Science, social studies, and history.
Basic first aid, CPR, and written District procedures for universal precautions.

ABILITY TO:
Make arithmetic calculations.
Understand and follow oral and written directions. Communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Understand and apply rules, regulations, procedures, and policies.
Understand the exceptional needs of Special Education students and demonstrate compassion accordingly.
Operate instructional and office machines.
Assist with instructional activities in a classroom. Learn the procedures, functions, and limitations of assigned duties.
Remain calm under stressful conditions.
Bilingual Spanish proficiency preferred.
Perform the essential functions of the job.

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and some training and/or experience in working with Special Education students.
Must meet NCLB requirements – to meet requirement, applicants must possess either an Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree or 48 semester units from college/university or pass District examination.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Some positions may require a valid California driver's license.
Valid American Red Cross Standard First Aid Certificate or willingness to obtain certificate within six weeks of employment (at employee expense and not on work time). Valid CPR certificate. Adequate training to perform job requirements.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
ENVIRONMENT:
Classroom and playground environment.
Driving a vehicle to conduct work; some positions may be required to travel between school sites.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
Lifting, carrying, and physically manipulating students to move students in and out of wheelchairs, normally not exceeding sixty (60) pounds.
Pushing students in wheelchairs.
Seeing to monitor student work.
Hearing and speaking to exchange information.
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate instructional and medical equipment.
Bending at the waist, kneeling, or crouching to assist students.
Sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
Performing light work that involves sitting a portion of the time.
May require heavy lifting approximately fifty (50) pounds or more on occasion (e.g., lifting of students and equipment to implement toileting procedures or movement of students to/from wheelchair, stander, walker, etc.), pushing and/or pulling of objects, and walking and standing for extended periods

HAZARDS:
Contact with blood and other body fluids.
