Policy Analyst, Federal Fiscal Policy

Summary

American Progress has an immediate opening for a Policy Analyst focusing on federal fiscal policy. The position requires strong quantitative skills, experience using economic data and research to make compelling public policy arguments, meticulousness, comfort with a fast-paced environment, and a passion for advancing progressive economic policy. The candidate’s primary role will be to conceive and produce rigorous analyses of federal taxes and the federal budget that inform current policy debates. The candidate will support the Economic Policy team’s work on fiscal and overall economic issues.

Responsibilities:

  • Author and contribute analysis to publications such as reports, issue briefs, and fact sheets that distill key economic and public policy issues for nonexpert audiences, and marshal rigorous research to formulate or argue for proposed tax and fiscal policies.
  • Perform rapid-response research on new issues that arise.
  • Work with other American Progress teams—including other policy teams, Art, Government Affairs, Digital Strategy, and Press—to create engaging and visually compelling research and analysis.
  • Ensure factual accuracy of products.
  • Help build and maintain relationships with allied organizations, outside experts, congressional staff, and other contacts.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience and training is required.
  • Approximately three years of relevant work experience.
  • Strong quantitative skills and familiarity with economic data, with a creative approach to using economic data to make compelling policy arguments.
  • Previous experience or significant coursework in taxation and/or federal budget policy.
  • Flexibility as a teammate and a commitment to the Economic Policy team’s goals.
  • Good writing skills and instincts for data visualization.
  • Meticulousness and attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well on a team.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and adapt quickly to new priorities.
  • Political or legislative experience is a plus.
  • Knowledge of advanced statistical software such as Stata, R, or Python is a plus.
