Our team is growing to meet this need by hiring a Manager of Internal Communications to develop and implement a communications plan to raise staff awareness of our global conservation strategy and its strong science foundation among 4000 colleagues worldwide. This position reports to the Director, Internal Communications, in the Global Marketing and Communications Division. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Manager will support internal communications priorities of our conservation leaders that are directed to the all-staff audience and work closely with the Chief Conservation Office and the field to ensure that all staff know what our goals are, how to talk about them and how their role makes a contribution. The Manager will highlight conservation successes and science, share inspiring stories of our people and places, and create opportunities for diverse staff voices to speak about our work in internal channels. Working with the Chief Conservation Office and Conservation team other key stakeholders such as our scientists, the Manager will design all-staff outreach strategies around major events, milestones and announcements, and create guidance, tools and resources that support staff. The role will help manage strategy for the distribution of important information to staff in a timely manner, ensuring that messages are consistent and promoted across all internal channels. The Manager can see the big picture while keeping track of the details and can make complex information relatable, understandable and inspiring.

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

  • Working with the Chief Conservation Office team, help develop and implement an internal communications plan for TNC’s global conservation strategy and its scientific underpinning and the narrative that makes it come alive. This includes supporting the rollout of a training program for staff so they are confident, clear communicators about our work.
  • Help lead event creation and storytelling that inspires staff about our conservation work.
  • Curate, produce and coordinate conservation and science content across all channels including TNC’s Intranet, social media platform, live virtual events, and all-staff email and e-newsletter. Types of content includes blogs, short videos, live virtual events, social media posts, all-staff emails, all-staff newsletter, presentations and Intranet sites.
  • Provide coaching, writing support, event production and talking points to leaders serving as spokesperson(s) in internal channels.
  • Help develop major updates from TNC conservation executives to the all-staff audience that may be delivered in writing, by recorded video message or during live virtual events.
  • Manage TNC’s Executive Council’s Virtual Office Hours’ planning and promotion internally.
  • Coordinate a group of internal communications colleagues across regions and global teams to increase collaboration and information sharing and to gather examples of our work for all-staff channels.
  • Act as a thought partner to conservation and science leaders on internal communications best practices to make it easier for staff to connect to our mission and one another.
  • Ensure that our core values and diverse voices are represented in all internal communications channels from our all-staff emails to our Intranet, internal social media and live staff events. 
  • Work across a wide spectrum of constituencies and coordinate multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Develop messaging and communications that are tailored to the audience and written in simple to understand, relatable and authentic way. 
  • Continuously challenge the messaging and channels to keep content fresh. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field and a minimum 5 years’ related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience implementing and measuring strategic communications plans.
  • Experience communicating conservation, biodiversity issues, natural sciences or climate change.
  • Experience creating multimedia content across different channels and formats.
  • Experience managing stakeholder groups or project teams.
  • Experience writing, editing and proofreading 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

The strongest candidates will also bring one or more of the following:

  • Multi-lingual skills.
  • Multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience, preferably living or having lived outside of the U.S.
  • Experience advising leaders on their communications strategies.
  • Knowledge of current and evolving trends in strategic communications or internal communications. 
  • Experience working with people across time zones to meet quick deadlines.
  • Excellent writing, presentation, and communication skills. 
  • Familiarity with communication technologies and best practices.  
  • Experience in rapid response communications.
  • Strong organization skills and attention to detail.
