The Welding Apprentice will initially work to learn the laborer’s responsibilities in order to support all aspects of the scope of work. During the three-year apprenticeship program, the apprentice will take part in classroom as well as on-the-job training to learn basic construction laborer skills. After the first year the apprentice will begin the formal welding training at PG Community College during the evening two nights a week as well as work their 8-hour workday five days per week. The apprentice during their apprenticeship program will learn to:
Lagging - constructing soldier piles; excavating in small stages; backfiring and compacting the void behind the lagging.
Underpinning - including construction footing, stem walls, driven piles or drilled piers.
Learn to operate hand and power tools of all types.
Read blueprints and drawings and take or read measurements to plan layout and procedures.
Determine the right welding equipment or method based on requirements.
Set up components for welding according to specifications (e.g., cut material with powered saws to match measurements).
Operate angle grinders to prepare the parts that must be welded.
Align components using calipers, rulers, clamp pieces, etc.
Weld components using manual or semi-automatic welding equipment in various positions (vertical, horizontal, or overhead).
Repair machinery and other components by welding pieces and filling gaps.
Test and inspect welded surfaces and structure to discover flaws.
Maintain equipment in a condition that does not compromise safety.

Must obtain a class B California driver's license within 6 months of appointment, and have a satisfactory driving record
Must possess sufficient strength and stamina to lift and carry objects weighing up to 80 pounds and to perform sustained heavy physical labor
Must be willing to work out of doors in all weather conditions, to work underground in confined places and with exposure to unpleasant and potentially hazardous conditions
Must be willing to work overtime and off hours shifts in emergency situations
Knowledge and Abilities

The General Laborer/Assembler will report to the Fabrication Team Lead and the Operations Manager.
The General Laborer/Assembler is tasked with assisting the fabrication team with material handling and aluminum fabrication for beams used in the construction industry. Experience with construction, landscaping, moving, assembly, heavy lifting, or general labor would be helpful. Must be a team player!
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
75%: Material Handling (working with a team to drill into aluminum beams with speed and quality, ensuring production deadlines are met)
10%: Loading/Unloading Flatbed trucks
5%: Assisting with running machines
5%: Cleans work area, machines, tools, and equipment at end of shift
5%: Other duties as assigned
PHYSICAL DEMAINDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk; use hands to handle objects, power tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 15 pounds; walking distances in an industrial setting.
While performing the duties of this job, the noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Fabricator is recommended to wear the following personal protective equipment at all times: Gloves, Hearing protection, Steel toe boots, or other items as instructed. Closed-toe shoes are required.
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS
Ability to comprehend simple verbal instructions in English (we do have one Spanish speaker on the floor for translating)
Tape Measure and basic math skills
Self-starter capable of completing tasks with minimal supervision
Ability to identify and solve problems as they arise
Ability to learn and use various types of machinery such as a forklift, presses, ironworkers
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly and lift up to 15 lbs multiple times per day
DESIRABLE SKILLS
Ability to operate forklift and/or forklift certification
