Job Description

PURPOSE  

The Relief Residential Youth Counselor works on an intermittent or as needed basis to fill in a shift normally worked by a full time Residential Youth Counselor in our licensed residential programs for youth. The primary responsibility of the Relief Residential Youth Counselor is ensuring the safety, support and supervision of all youth in our staffed residential programs. 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES 

  • Maintain a comfortable living environment by demonstrating to youth that they are respected and understood as individuals; by demonstrating that adults can help them deal with challenging behaviors without being punitive, retaliatory, rejecting. 
  • Responsible for the supervision and monitoring of all youth in the program and to be aware of their whereabouts at all times. 
  • Maintain daily communication log, and milieu notes of youths’ whereabouts, activities and behavior for each youth. 
  • Help youth develop appropriate and healthy relationships with peers and staff. 
  • Report any known or suspected abuse, exploitation or neglect of youth in consultation with management to Child Protective Services. 
  • Facilitate regularly scheduled groups and structured activities as requested. 
  • Demonstrate acceptance of, and establish a positive relationship with each youth.
  • Assist youth with establishing and achieving their goals, while modeling appropriate behavior and healthy behavior. 
  • Transport and accompany youth to appointments as assigned. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS  

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent required; Bachelor's Degree in Social Work or Social Sciences preferred. 
  • Experience working with homeless youth and/or youth that are involved in the foster care system preferred. 
  • Minimum of one-year full-time experience working or volunteering with youth. 

 

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS  

Non-Bilingual starting rate of $17 per hour and Bilingual in Spanish starting rate of $17.50 per hour + $250 signing bonus*.

 

LOCATION & SCHEDULE 

Relief staff can pick shifts from the available openings including Day (8am-4pm), Swing (4pm-12am), and Overnight (12am-8am). Relief staff must pick up at least one shift per month. Work is performed onsite/in-person in Kirkland, WA. 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES  

  • Demonstrates a commitment to the values of equity and inclusion by honoring and celebrating diverse characteristics and expressions of personal identity.   
  • Ability to engage with diverse populations in a culturally responsive manner.  
  • Understand the dynamics of homelessness and trauma experienced by the youth and incorporate knowledge into daily interactions with youth. 
  • Knowledge of Strength Based Practice, Harm Reduction, and Trauma Informed Care. 
  • Understanding of clear and appropriate boundaries with youth. 
  • Ability to perform CPR and First Aid and to administer Naloxone, if needed (training provided).

 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT  

  • Must be 21 years of age or older. 
  • Must satisfactorily pass criminal background check.
  • Must satisfactorily pass tuberculosis (TB) test.   
  • Must have a valid Washington State driver's license.   
  • Must have a safe driving record as defined by Friends of Youth. 
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination (or approved medical/religious exemption request).
